As part of the takedown of the NYTimes paywall on fishwrap they also abandoned the old blog link exception to the paywall that Dave Winer managed to negotiate many years ago. That means that instead of the old way - where bloglinks led to articles - you're now led to a "sign in to NYTimes" page. Much worse. So the upgrade is in fact a downgrade. I've heard that story before.
